Seasonal Tips

Tip No. 1 – SEASONAL CLEANUPS

The spring clean up is a traditionally when people think of clean up, but at the Groundskeeper, we try to clean each of the 4 seasons and take care of what the previous season has done to the lawn and landscape. As the season is ending; remove all leaves, sticks, and debris from the beds and lawns. Depending on the season; prune and dead head perennials, roses, and hydrangeas. Rake and grade the beds and turn the existing mulch over.

Tip No. 2 – LAWN CARE

The lawn is one of the most important features to most homes and landscapes. Good cultural practices include cutting your grass to about 3-3.5 inches, never cutting more than a 1/3 of the total grass blade. The first and final cut of the year can be slightly shorter. Mow in different directions as much as possible. Keep your mower blade sharp at all times.

Aerate your yard twice a year in the fall and the spring. Aeration will help air and nutrients to better move through the soil. In addition, aeration will help with compaction problems due to constant summer traffic and play.

Seed your yard annually. Fall is the best the time for seeding. By seeding in fall, you can establish the lawn and allow for spring pre-emergent weed treatments without having to worry about new planted grass seed. If necessary, spring is acceptable and the second best time. If your yard is stressed, has shaded areas, or undesirable grasses, we recommend slice seeding or aeration with over seeding. The grasses today are considerable better, stronger and more tolerant of poor conditions. Because todays high quality seeds are better and stronger, by seeding your yard you can actually convert your yard to a darker, softer, much more attractive lawn.
